A couple of years ago I attended Shell's annual Eco-Marathon, where students from around Europe battle to go as far as possible on a single litre of petrol in a vehicle of their own construction. From the website, the record appears to be just shy of 5000 kilometers.
These examples show us just how much more value we can gain from our existing resources. They are great cause for optimism, particularly given the response of the car companies to the sustainable mobility agenda in recent years, whatever the motivation.
